A Scientific Study About Healing Surgical Patients
The double-blind clinical study, part of a $1.3 million grant to the University of Arizona by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative medicine of the National Institute of health, will examine the effects of Johrei on patients recovering from cardiac bypass surgery.
Tucson Johrei Center members are key to a unique scientific study of the effectiveness of Johrei on healing surgical patients.
The double-blind clinical study, part of a $1.3 million grant to the University of Arizona by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative medicine of the National Institute of health, will examine the effects of Johrei on patients recovering from cardiac bypass surgery. Levels of stress and pain, rate of wound healing and number of complications resulting from surgery will be measured.
Once a patient is chosen to receive Johrei, pertinent information is sent to a coordinator at the Tucson Johrei Center and a Johrei giver is assigned. All data is confidential and is not to be discussed with anyone. Before giving Johrei for the first time to a patient, the giver says the Amatsu Norito and reports to God that Johrei will be given for the purpose of scientific research on wound healing and pain control, and ask God to send Light. The giver then sends Johrei for a total of 27 minutes fron and back. This routine will be followed three times on the day of surgery and once a day for three days after surgery.
Dr. Allan Hamilton, chairman of the University of Arizona Department of Surgery and principal investigator for the project, says "this scientific research on alternative medical practices mirrors a trend among medical schools all over the country to try to understand the mechanisms that lead to the connection between mind and body, and spirituality and healing." While other smaller studies have documented the positive effects of prayer and a spiritual support system, this is the first clinical study to scientifically document the effects of Johrei on physical healing.
